House by House: 9 Hawthorne Road

1911
The first census recording the houses was taken in 1911, so these were probably the first tenants of the house.

  • Thomas Sing, head, 81, retired clerk of asylum (pensioned by Birmingham City Council), born [Duntford] in Shropshire.
  • Louisa Emilie Sing, dau, 52, certificated nurse, born Kings Norton.
  • Edith Minnie Sing, dau, 38, clerk and typist at a jeweller's, born Aston.

1916-1918
Between October 1916 and December 1918 the Sing family were still residing at 9 Hawthorne Road as Edith Minnie Sing was a British Red Cross volunteer working at Highbury Hospital in Moseley during World War I. Her rank was 'Quartermaster' and her role was described as: 'Accounts. Gifts - Collecting and conveyance, Housemaid's duties at Highbury - occasional'.

1925
On the 1925 electoral register the resident at 9 Hawthorne Road were:
Edith Minnie Sing
(this register included men over 21 and women over 30)
