House by House: 51 Kingsley Road

1911
The first census recording the houses was taken in 1911, so these were probably the first tenants of the house.

  • William Bailey, head, 46, stamper, piercer and press toolmaker for cycle and electrical, born Birmingham.
  • Edith Mary Bailey, wife, 44, none, born Wolverhampton.
  • Will Bailey, son, 22, metal welding for electrical welding, born Birmingham.
  • Leonard Frank Bailey, son, 20, clerk, born Aston.
  • Bertram Philip Bailey, son, 13, none, born Rubery.
  • Edith Muriel Bailey, daughter, 6, none, born Kings Norton.
  • Donald E. Bailey, son, 4, none, born Handsworth.

William Bailey's younger brothers, Harold and Herbert Andrew, lived at number 30 and 32 respectively, at the time of the 1911 census. All three were sons of George Bailey (see here).


1918
On the 1918 absent voters list, the following usual resident of 51 Kingsley Road was:
Bertram Philip Bailey (456, 1 Sec, 4 Co, MGBatt)

Bertram was in the Guards Machine Gun Regiment and received medals in 1920.

On the 1920 and 1922 electoral registers the residents at 51 Kingsley Road were:

Between at least  1911 and 1918 the Roberts family had lived at 54 Kingsley Road.

Percy Roberts was secretary to the Tenants committee from the 1930s, and one of his duties was to collect rents, which at that time were collected door-to-door. When work needed doing to any of the houses, the centenary handbook states that he 'did not pay a bill until he had personally inspected the completed job'.
